Ernests Gulbis announces retirement from tennis
Former top 10 player Ernests Gulbis has officially retired after more than a year of inactivity
Latvian Ernests Gulbis officially announced his retirement from tennis on Sunday, after being inactive for more than 12 months on the ATP Tour.
The 35-year-old is a former top 10 player, first achieving his career-high milestone in 2014 off the back of a run to the Roland-Garros semi-finals. This was his best ever Grand Slam performance, with the Latvian defeating Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych en route to a semi-final loss to Novak Djokovic.
Gulbis has six ATP Tour-level titles to his name, winning in Delray Beach, Los Angeles, St. Petersburg, Marseilles and Nice.
However, the past decade has been a challenging one for Gulbis, whose ranking has plummeted since his peak in 2014. After over a year of inactivity, the former Grand Slam semi-finalist announced his retirement on his personal Instagram account this weekend.
