19-time Grand Slam champion Neale Fraser passes away
The Aussie breathed his last on December 2, 2024
Neale Fraser, 19-time Grand Slam champion from Australia, breathed his last on December 2, 2024, at 91 years old. Fraser played tennis till 1977, reaching the world No 1 ranking in 1959.
He won three Grand Slams in singles, with his most famous win recorded against countryman Rod Laver in the 1960 Wimbledon final. The other two Major singles trophies in his collections are from the 1959 and 1960 US Open competitions.
In doubles, Fraser won the Australian Open (1957-58, 1962), French Open (1958, 1960, 1962), and US Open thrice (1957, 1959-60), and Wimbledon twice (1959, 1961). He triumphed in Melbourne (1956) and London (1962) once each, and three times in New York (1958-60) in mixed doubles.
Tennis Australia announced Fraser’s demise on Tuesday (December 3):
“Australian tennis has lost one of its giants with the passing of Neale Fraser AO, MBE.”
