ATP Rankings: Fritz makes top-10 debut, Tiafoe career-high, Kwon biggest riser, Djokovic qualifies for Turin
Taylor Fritz hit a ranking milestone and moved into qualification position in the Race to Turin after claiming the title in Tokyo. This and more in our rankings update…
It was a big week for American Taylor Fritz, who claimed the Tokyo title and will make his top-10 debut on Monday. But Fritz wasn’t the only player charging up the rankings. Scroll down for a closer look at this week’s rankings movers and shakers…
Taylor Fritz had himself a week in Tokyo
Taylor Fritz’ breakthrough 2022 continues in full force. The American had to pull out of Seoul due to Covid-19 last week, and he nearly missed out on taking part in the Tokyo main draw as well. But Fritz made it just in the nick of time when he procured a negative test, left his quarantine in South Korea and flew to Tokyo just in time to take his spot in the main draw at the prestigious 500-level event.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Fritz won the his third title of 2022 on Sunday in Tokyo, defeating Frances Tiafoe in the final, and for his efforts the American will make his top-10 debut and rise to No 8 in the world (+3 from 11).
Additionally, Fritz moves to No 7 in the ATP’s race to Turin, which means his is currently in the last spot due to the fact that Novak Djokovic (10th in the Race) has already qualified due to his Wimbledon title.
Tiafoe inches higher after another positive week
Frances Tiafoe wasn’t able to come away with the title in Tokyo, but the 24-year-old American still continues his rise up the rankings. Tiafoe, who reached his first Grand Slam semi-final at this year’s US Open, rises another two spots to No 17 in the rankings. It’s a career high for the Maryland native, and it leaves him 21 spotsd higher than where he started the season.
Kwon biggest riser in top-100 after semi-final at Tokyo
Soonwoo Kwon reached his first 500-level semi-final in Tokyo, and rises 34 spots to No 86 in the world. It was a big week for the former world No 52, who notched wins over Alex de Minaur, Mackenzie McDonald and Pedro Martinez.
Djokovic makes Turin qualification official after claiming Astana Title
Novak Djokovic continues his domination tour in Europe, as the Serb racked up his 90th ATP title in Astana when he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in Sunday’s final. Djokovic doesn’t advance in the rankings this week (remains at No 7), but he does officially qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the 15th time.
Djokovic just needed to finish inside the top-20 of the Race standings after the Rolex Paris Masters on Nov 7 to qualify, thanks to his Wimbledon title, and he has assured himself of that, thanks to back-to-back titles in Tel Aviv and Astana.
Djokovic is a five-time champion at the ATP Finals, and is chasing Roger Federer’s all-time record of six titles at the event.
Here are the Race to Turin standings as of October 10:
