Swiss Valentina Ryser reached the last 16 of the Tiriac Foundation Trophy when Russian Ekaterina Makarova, the No 7 seed, retired on Monday afternoon.
Ryser, ranked No 241, led 6-4, 2-0 when Makarova, ranked No 162, pulled out on Monday.
The Swiss will face the winner of the match between Belgian Marie Benoit and Swiss qualifier Leonie Kung next.
