WTA Indian Wells: Bencic advances to second round, faces Anisimova next

Swiss wildcard Belinda Bencic reached the second round of the BNP Paribas Open by defeating German Tatjana Maria 6-1, 6-1 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Thursday.

This was the Swiss woman’s third win in as many meetings over Maria – their most recent match came a decade ago in Miami in 2015.

Bencic, ranked No 58 and winner in Abu Dhabi last month, will face No 17 seed Amanda Anisimova, of the United States, next. The American holds a 2-1 lead in the career head-to-head between the two with their last meeting coming in 2022.
