“Wonder if I’ll ever be completely free of pain” – Krejcikova raises recovery concerns, pulls out of Indian Wells and Miami
Barbora Krejcikova hasn’t played on the tour since the WTA Finals in November 2024, nursing a back injury
Czechia’s Barbora Krejcikova further delayed her return to competitive tennis by pulling out of the WTA 1000 tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami on Wednesday.
The Indian Wells tournament organisers announced Krejcikova’s decision through a social media post, noting the reigning Wimbledon champion’s injury woes. Austrian Julia Grabher has filled in for her in the 2025 Indian Wells Open women’s singles main draw.
Krejcikova hasn’t competed on the tour after losing to China’s Zheng Qinwen in the WTA Finals last-four stage in November 2024. She has been out, nursing a back injury since then.
In an interview ahead of her withdrawal, the 29-year-old raised recovery concerns.
“The recovery is not as fast as I hoped,” Krejcikova told Sports.cz (translated). “But I am doing everything to return as soon as possible. I just wonder if I’ll ever be completely free of pain. It stresses me out.”
She further revealed the trouble began during the Paris Olympics when the weather wasn’t very kind. Fresh of a triumphant run at Wimbledon, she failed to carry the momentum through the clay courts of Roland Garros, falling in the quarter-finals of singles and doubles (with Katerina Siniakova) events.
“Going from grass to clay is the hardest, and there was also very little time. The first day it rained, then it was hot, I played in the afternoon in the greatest heat, plus long matches. And then doubles in the evening. The next day again. My strength was decreasing very quickly. I did an interview after the match, but I didn’t feel well. I had to lie down, they brought me a Coke to give me energy. My head was spinning, I had cramps.”
