Rybakina up to career-high No 7 after Indian Wells win

Elena Rybakina‘s reward for winning the Indian Wells title was a career-high ranking after she climbed three places to No 7 when the list was officially updated on Monday.

The Wimbledon champion, who would have been ranked even higher had ranking points not been taken away from Wimbledon last year due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players, beat Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to win the title in Indian Wells on Sunday.

The Moscow-born Kazakh is still a distance behind Coco Gauff in sixth (681 points as of March 20, 2023) but on this kind of form, she could be moving higher very soon, with the Miami Open an immediate chance to add more points.

Swiatek still well clear at the top

Iga Swiatek remains well clear at the top of the rankings, though the gap has shortened to 3,235 points after she was beaten by Rybakina in the semis in Indian Wells, having won the title 12 months ago.

The Pole is defending another 1,000 points in Miami, which begins on Tuesday, so the gap between her and Indian Wells finalist Sabalenka may yet be further reduced.

Caroline Garcia climbs one place to fourth, equalling her career-best. Ons Jabeur falls to fifth and Maria Sakkari, the runner-up last year, drops three places to No 7.

Just outside the top 10, there are three-place rises for the Czechs Petra Kvitova and Barbora Krejcikova, to 13th and 14th respectively.
