Garcia gets the best of Mertens in Monterrey semi-finals
Caroline Garcia defeated Elise Mertens 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday and will play Croat Donna Vekic, the No 3 seed, for the title
The top seed at the Monterrey Open had no trouble whatsoever reaching the final.
Caroline Garcia won her fourth straight-set match of the week when she defeated Elise Mertens 6-3, 6-4 during semi-final action at the Estadio GNP Seguros on Saturday night. Garcia advanced after one hour and 41 minutes of play.
Garcia, ranked No 5, will play third seed Donna Vekic in Sunday’s championship match
Earlier in the tournament, the Frenchwoman defeated Slovenian Kaja Juvan (6-3, 6-4), Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz (6-3, 6-2) and Egyptian Mayar Sherif, the No 7 seed (6-0, 6-4).
Mertens, ranked No 42, beat Russian Diana Shnaider (6-0, 6-4), Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) and Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, the No 8 seed (6-2, 6-2) in the previous rounds.
