American Katie Volynets, the No 8 seed, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Makarska Open by winning against New Zealander Lulu Sun 6-4, 7-5 on Thursday.
Volynets, ranked No 108, will play the winner of the match between Romanian Miriam Bulgaru and Frenchwoman Leolia Jeanjean next.
The 22-year-old American beat Belarusian Iryna Shymanovich (6-3, 6-0) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round, Sun, ranked No 128, defeated Ukrainian Kateryna Baindl (6-1, 2-6, 6-2).
