Italian Open: Ostapenko scrambles into quarter-finals
Jelena Ostapenko edged out Rebecca Sramkova 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) on Monday. She’ll face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 16 seed, and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, in the next round
Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 9 seed, reached the last eight of the Italian Open by edging out Slovak qualifier Rebecca Sramkova 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) at the Foro Italico in Roma on Monday afternoon.
Ostapenko, ranked No 10, will face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 16 seed, and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, next.
The Latvian won against Russian Anastasia Potapova (6-4, 6-2) and Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo (6-4, 5-7, 6-1) in the previous rounds of the Rome tournament.
Earlier in the tournament, Sramkova, ranked No 120, defeated Italian wildcard Giorgia Pedone (6-4, 6-1), No 26 seed Katie Boulter (6-4, 7-6 (8)) and American Sofia Kenin (6-4, 4-6, 6-4).
