Hong Kong Open: Defending champ Fernandez into quarter-finals to face Pera

Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 3 seed, advanced to the last eight of the Hong Kong Open by beating Australian Kimberly Birrell 6-1, 6-2 at Victoria Park, Causeway Bay on Thursday.
Fernandez, ranked No 32 and the defending champion here, will play American Bernarda Pera, the No 9 seed, next.
Ahead of her win today, the 22-year-old Canadian defeated Great Britain’s Heather Watson (6-2, 6-2).
Birrell, ranked No 115, won against Romanian Ana Bogdan (6-3, 6-4) in the previous round of the tournament.
