Gauff gets walkover from injured Konta into Montreal quarter-finals
Coco Gauff gets a free pass into the Montreal quarter-finals when Johanna Konta withdraws on Thursday. Gauff awaits either Petra Kvitova or Camila Giorgi.
In her first tournament since Wimbledon following a bout with Covid-19, Johanna Konta made an impressive march into the third round of the National Bank Open in Montreal. It began with a fortuitous second-set retirement by Shuai Zhang, who was leading Konta by a set at the time.
For Konta, the roles of luck were reversed a few days later.
Dealing with an injury of her own, the veteran Brit handed Coco Gauff a walkover prior to their scheduled Thursday showdown. Konta cited a knee injury as the reason.
Gauff’s reward is a quarter-final contest against Italy’s Camila Giorgi. who upset the 2012 Omnium Banque Nationale champion Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 36 minutes.
The 17-year-old American began her week with victories over Anastasija Sevastova and Anastasia Potapova. Interestingly, Gauff got a first-set retirement from Potapova on Wednesday. That means she has played a grand total of five games in the last two rounds.
