Briton Jones continues breakthrough week by reaching first WTA semi-final in Bogota
Francesca Jones won against Laura Pigossi 6-4, 6-2 on Friday evening and will face German Tatjana Maria, the second seed, in the next round
Unheralded Briton Fran Jones defeated Brazilian Laura Pigossi, the No 6 seed, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the semi-finals of the Bogota Open at the Country Club Bogota on Friday.
The 22-year-old, who has been out injured for almost a year and a half, will face German Tatjana Maria, the second seed, next. She’ll climb from No 817 in the rankings to just outside the world’s top 350 next week.
Jones won against Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz, the No 3 seed (7-6 (3), 6-1) and Canadian Carol Zhao (6-2, 6-1) ahead of her victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Pigossi, ranked No 101, beat Colombian wildcard Antonia Samudio (6-1, 6-0) and edged out Serb qualifier Natalija Stevanovic (7-5, 5-7, 6-4).
