Wimbledon: Sun makes history for New Zealand
The Kiwi player will meet wildcard Emma Raducanu in the next round
New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun reached the last 16 of Wimbledon by defeating Chinese Lin Zhu 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6) at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Friday.
The Kiwi player, ranked No 123, will face wildcard Emma Raducanu next.
Lulu Sun is the second player competing for New Zealand to make the fourth round in a women’s Singles Grand Slam event after Belinda Cordwell (Australian Open 1988 and 1989).
The New Zealander edged out Chinese Qinwen Zheng, the No 8 seed (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) and won against Ukrainian qualifier Yulia Starodubtseva (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) ahead of her victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Zhu, ranked No 61, beat Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu (6-0, 6-4) and Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the No 25 seed (6-4, 6-3).
