‘It’s beautiful to play here!’ Exultant Alcaraz advances to Wimbledon second round

Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed, won against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 to move into the second round of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Tuesday afternoon.

He wrapped up the opening two sets in less than an hour, with a pragmatic Chardy celebrating his first game on the board to much acclaim from the crowd.

Alcaraz wrapped up the much closer third set with an ace to seal his place in the second round, where he will play the winner of the match between Alexandre Muller and Arthur Rinderknech.

Asked about playing under the Centre Court roof, the Spaniard described the architecture as “beautiful”, adding: “It doesn’t change too much for me, honestly. I try not to think about it. We’ve had the roof, it’s better for me, for everyone [because of the rain]. I have to be really focused with the roof or not. I have to find my best level.”

And reflecting on the support he received from the crowd, he said: “It’s beautiful to play here. I have great memories from last year playing in this tournament. I’m really happy to have a lot of people supporting me, not only in Spain but around the world as well. I’m a really lucky guy to live this experience, this love in every country that I go.”
