US Open: Tiafoe beats Schwartzman and advances to last 16

American Frances Tiafoe, the No 22 seed, reached the last 16 of the US Open by winning against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, the No 14 seed, 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Saturday.

Tiafoe was down 5-2 in the first set and had to save two set points at 5-4 before getting another break back at 6-5, and then had to come back again from 6-3 down in the tie-break before clinching that set 7-6(7). As if it was to be the trend of his match, the American was also down a break in the second set (2-0).

Tiafoe, ranked No 26, will now play the winner of the match between Frenchman Richard Gasquet and Spaniard Rafael Nadal, the second seed, next. This is the third year in a row that he qualifies for the fourth round here.

The American beat Marcos Giron (7-6, 6-4, 6-3) and Australian Jason Kubler (7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (2)) in the previous rounds. Earlier in the tournament, Schwartzman, ranked No 16, benefited from the retirement of American Jack Sock (3-6, 5-7, 6-0, 1-0) and won against Australian Alexei Popyrin (7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (6)).
