US Open: Safiullin impresses against Cecchinato in first round, to play local favourite Paul next

Russian Roman Safiullin reached the second round of the US Open by defeating Italian Marco Cecchinato 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Monday night.

Safiullin had an excellent day on serve, crushing 12 aces and making 72 percent of first serves (of which he won the point 89 percent of the time). He also made double the winners than Cecchinato and kept his unforced errors to 19 across the one hour, 20 minute match.

The Wimbledon quarter-finalist, ranked No 60, will play American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed, next.
