Garcia maintains form to make first ever US Open quarter-final
The 28-year-old is now on a 12-match winning streak and has not dropped a set on her way to the last eight
France’s Caroline Garcia continued her stunning streak of form as she beat American Alison Riske-Amritraj, the No 29 seed, 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time in her career.
The No 17 seed, who took out former champion Bianca Andreescu in the previous round, is through to the last eight for the loss of just 20 games, taking her win streak to 12 matches, a run that began in qualifying in Cincinnati and took her all the way to the title.
Ranked 75 as recently as June, Garcia is now set to rise to No 12 on the back of her US Open run. One more win will send her back into the top 10. It’s her second time in a slam quarter-final, having made the last eight at the French Open in 2017.
The tennis was probably not the best level at times but the second set was really good.

“I’m so excited to be in the quarter-final,” said Garcia, who plays either Coco Gauff or Zhang Shuai in the next round. “I’m really trying to be aggressive and go for my shots even when I’m not feeling it. It’s how I’ve been moving forward this summer. I’m really enjoying it, I’m having fun.”
After winning a tight first set, Garcia began to cut loose, showing the kind of form that took her all the way to the title in Cincinnati. The only time she faltered was when she was serving at 5-1, 40-15 but she served her way out of trouble and will go into her quarter-final full of confidence.
“The first set was really tough,” she said. “The tennis was probably not the best level at times but the second set was really good.”
Garcia defeated Russian lucky loser Kamilla Rakhimova (6-2, 6-4), Russian Anna Kalinskaya (6-3, 6-1) and Canadian Bianca Andreescu (6-3, 6-2) before taking out Riske-Amritraj.
The American, ranked No 29, beat wildcard Eleana Yu (6-2, 6-4), Colombian Camila Osorio (6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5)) and Chinese Xiyu Wang (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) in the previous rounds.
