‘Tsurenko thanked me – but there’s nothing to thank me for’ – Swiatek on her continuing support for Ukraine
Iga Swiatek’s vocal support for Ukraine has not gone unnoticed
Iga Swiatek has used her high profile and position as world No 1 to draw attention to the ongoing war in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion last year.
She has worn ribbons in yellow and blue on her kit and spoken in trophy ceremonies about the continuing conflict as well as playing a fundraising exhibition and calling on the WTA to do more to support Ukrainian players.
And after her win in Rome over Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko, she revealed just what her opponent said to her after the match.
“She thanked me for supporting Ukraine, but she did it also before in Miami. It’s really nice and I really appreciate that,” Swiatek said in her press conference.
“Well, I think there’s nothing to kind of thank for because for me it’s pretty obvious that we should support Ukraine. Yeah, I will do that until the war is going to end.
“But I know that they are in a tough situation, so I have a lot of empathy to all the Ukrainian players.”
