Swiatek demolishes Potapova with double-bagel victory in 40 minutes
The world No 1 overawed Potapova 6-0, 6-0 to cruise into the quarter-finals. She will play Olga Danilovic or Marketa Vondrousova in the last eight
Iga Swiatek dismantled Anastasia Potapova 6-0, 6-0 to sail into the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in just 40 minutes.
It is the fifth consecutive year that Swiatek has reached the last eight at the clay-court Grand Slam, and she did so in devastating style.
The world No 1 dropped just ten points in a match that was over in the blink of an eye. She faced no break points and converted six out of the eight that she generated against the Potapova serve.
The result was the second-quickest match in Roland-Garros history, with only Steffi Graf’s victory over Natasha Zvereva in the 1988 final being a quicker contest.
It is also the first time since 2008 that a player has inflicted a double-bagel defeat in the second week of this tournament, and the first since 2013 at a Grand Slam.
Swiatek, ranked No 1, will play the winner of the match between Serb qualifier Olga Danilovic and No 5 seed Marketa Vondrousova next.
The Pole beat French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean (6-1, 6-2), Japanese Naomi Osaka (7-6 (1), 1-6, 7-5) and Marie Bouzkova (6-4, 6-2) ahead of her victory.
In the previous rounds, Potapova, ranked No 41, defeated Kamilla Rakhimova (6-2, 6-3), Swiss Viktorija Golubic (6-2, 6-2) and Chinese Xinyu Wang (7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-4).
