American Coco Gauff, the No 3 seed, won against Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, the No 30 seed, 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the last 16 of Roland-Garros at Roland-Garros in Paris on Friday.

Gauff has now got 18 match wins at Roland-Garros before the age of 21 – more than Chris Evert. Of American women, only Kathy Rinaldi and Mary Joe Fernandez had more by the same age.

Gauff, ranked No 3, will play Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto next.

Ahead of her victory, the 20-year-old American beat Russian qualifier Julia Avdeeva (6-1, 6-1) and Slovenian qualifier Tamara Zidansek (6-3, 6-4).

Yastremska, ranked No 32, defeated Australian wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Chinese Yafan Wang (6-2, 6-0) earlier in the tournament.

This was the first time in five appearances that Yastremska had made it past the opening round at Roland-Garros – but followed an amazing run to the semi-finals at the Australian Open as a qualifier earlier this year.
