“I am tired of these incessant and futile controversies” – Monfils speaks out on Auger-Aliassime conflict at Laver Cup

While Team World swept Team Europe 4-0 on day one of the Laver Cup, perhaps the most notable event was a conflict between Frenchman Gael Monfils, and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final singles match of the evening.
Irritated by Monfils taking his time between points, Auger-Aliassime asked the chair umpire to monitor his opponent, to which the 37-year-old took offence. Several heated exchanges unfolded at the subsequent change of ends, where it became clear that the two players had differing views on the intention of the Laver Cup. Auger-Aliassime was there to compete, while Monfils implied that the tournament was more of an exhibition.
Now, Monfils has spoken out about his side of the argument, explaining why he took exception to Auger-Alliassime in their match.
Monfils tired of controversy, explains Laver Cup participation
“I am tired of these incessant and futile controversies,” Gael Monfils posted on his X account (formerly Twitter) following his loss to Felix Auger-Aliassime.
“Some people seem to get excited over trifles. I am annoyed by those who make hasty judgments. Some might think that because I smile and have fun, I’m not serious. Sure, my vision may be different, but I always strive to follow the guidelines given to me.”
The veteran then went on to explain:
“At 37, I just try to make the most of every moment. When I was asked to participate in the Laver Cup, I was honoured. With my current ranking, outside the top 100 at this age, I even thought it was a joke. But I take this opportunity very seriously, for the event, for my team and especially for me. Traveling to Vancouver and leaving my family again is not the easiest thing.
“But, despite everything, I continue to practice my profession with passion and sincerity, as I have always done. And, without tongue in cheek, I must admit that I am very well paid for this and that the conditions are exceptional.
“I know, some will say that I have accomplished nothing, that I am a clown… But the truth is that I am happy and fulfilled. I want to say that the Laver Cup is a fantastic event, and I plan to make the most of the end of my weekend. Let’s go Team Europe, let’s catch up Team World!”
The pair will share the court again on day two of the Laver Cup, with Monfils partnering with Hubert Hurkacz to take on Auger-Aliassime and Ben Shelton in the final match of the day, which will be worth two points.
