‘Extra motivated’ Djokovic leads Serbia to Davis Cup win over Austria
It was a routine win at the end of a busy year for the world No 1
The world No 1 Novak Djokovic was in fine form as he beat Dennis Novak 6-3, 6-2 to seal Serbia’s win in Group F of the Davis Cup over Austria.
“I love to play for my country – I try to be available when the team needs me,” he said afterwards. “It’s been a long year but you always find extra motivation playing for your country.”
His win – in under an hour – was in contrast to Dusan Lajovic’s earlier victory over Gerald Melzer. The Serbian came through 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-5 in a match that lasted two hours and 42 minutes.
And the clean sweep was completed with the doubles as Nikola Cacic and Filip Krajinovic beat Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3.
Austria are without the injured Dominic Thiem, and although the tie is taking place in Innsbruck, no home crowd is permitted due to the local Covid-19 regulations.
