ATP rankings – Sinner top 3, De Minaur top 10, Diaz Acosta surging
This year’s Rotterdam finalists both hit rankings milestones in Monday’s ATP rankings. Join us for a look at this week’s biggest risers
Jannik Sinner has made more ranking history for Italy, while Alex de Minaur took another step higher. This and more as we look at this week’s movers and shakers.
And then there was No 3!
Jannik Sinner has won 32 of his last 34 matches, dating back to his run to the Beijing title in early October of last year, so naturally his ranking has been rocketing. After claiming the title at Rotterdam on Sunday, the 22-year-old becomes the highest-ranked Italian man in ATP history at No 3. He leapfrogs Daniil Medvedev, who was not in Rotterdam to defend his title this week.
Demon hits new ground
Alex de Minaur couldn’t change the course of his lopsided rivalry with Jannik Sinner on Sunday – the Aussie falls to 0-7 lifetime against Sinner – but he does take a step higher in the ranking department, reaching a career-best ranking of No 9. De Minaur, who in January became the first Australian to hold a top 10 ranking since Lleyton Hewitt in 2006, is 10-3 on the season.
His jump pushes Stefanos Tsitsipas out of the top 10. That’s a rough blow for Tsitsipas, who falls out of the ATP’s top 10 for the first time since February of 2019, more than five years ago.
Wherefore art thou, one-hander?
With Tsitsipas dropping out of the top 10, we also hit a sad milestone for the one-handed backhand on Monday. For the first time in ATP rankings history, there are no players that hit the one-handed backhand inside the top 10.
At the moment there are just three one-handed backhands inside the top 30 – No 11 Tsitsipas, No 13 Grigor Dimtrov and No 26 Lorenzo Musetti.
Diaz Acosta surging
It has been an incredible two weeks for Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta. He came to Cordoba last week with two ATP wins to his name. Today he leaves Buenos Aires with his maiden ATP title in tow and seven more victories at tour-level. For his effort, the 23-year-old is the biggest riser in this week’s ATP rankings – he jumps 28 spots to a career-high 59.
Jarry has a return to the top 20 as a consolation for his loss in the final, even though he was unable to back up his win over Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals at Buenos Aires.
Federico Coria, a semi-finalist at Buenos Aires, also jumped up 21 to return to the top 100 at No 85.
Other notable movers
Alexander Shevchenko of Russia gets a career-high ranking after posting a great result in Rotterdam. The 23-year-old upset Holger Rune for his best career win and rises to No 45, eclipsing his previous best ranking of 48.
Marcos Giron reached back-to-back semi-finals for the first time in his career at Dallas and Delray Beach, and jumps to a career-best ranking of 44.
Italy’s Flavio Cobolli made another career-high, at No 69, after reaching the Delray Beach quarter-finals. The 21-year-old has had a great season, starting the year at 101.
