Madison Keys, the seventh seed in the tournament, had to retire against Alize Cornet after the fifth game of the second set to an apparent neck injury. Cornet will next face Tsvetana Pironkova, who pulled off upsets against Garbine Muguruza and Donna Vekic.
The first set was closely contested as both the players held their service games through the set. Keys had an opportunity to snag the lead at 5-4, forcing a break point at 40-30, but the Frenchwoman came back to hold her serve.
The American had a rough start to the tie-break, falling behind 0-3 and 1-4 but was able to recover with two mini-breaks. However, Cornet was able to break back straight away and held on for a 7-4 tie-break win.
The players were tied in another close set with each of them holding on to their serves. Five break points arose on Keys’ side in the first two service game and Cornet stuffed those attempts. After a love game hold by Cornet at the fifth game, Keys decided she was not able to continue.
On the other side of the draw, Pironkova knocked off another seeded player in Vekic. The Bulgarian breezed past the Croatian 6-4, 6-1.
