Kvitova zooms past Zhang, sets up Siegemund quarter-final

Petra Kvitova looked ominously strong as she dismissed Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros. The Chinese star had not dropped a set so far in the tournament but could muster up little in the face of a Kvitova masterclass.
“It was a nice battle today,” she said afterwards. “I’m glad that I’ve found a way through the tournament so far.”
Time-out
Zhang received a medical time-out towards the end of the first set for what appeared to be a problem with her leg. And the treatment seemed to help her deal slightly with the Czech’s relentless pressure.

The 30-year-old had a slight stumble when given the opportunity to serve it out at 5-2, with her radar suddenly lost. But she gathered herself to hold to love at the next chance, securing her place in the next round.
First quarter-final
Kvitova will face Germany’s Laura Siegemund, who reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final by beating Paula Badosa Gibert of Spain 7-5, 6-2.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair with the German finding herself down a 5-3 hole, but she won four straight to claim the set. The second was all smooth-sailing for Siegemund as the only struggle for her was. singular break point she had to fend off.
