How did Schwartzman fare in his final French Open?
Playing in the qualifying draw, the Argentine defeated Austrian Lukas Neumayer 6-2, 6-3 in the first round before going down fighting to Frenchman Quentin Halys in a third set tiebreak 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-7) to end his final campaign at Roland-Garros, where he had reached the semi-finals in 2020.
is Diego Schwartzman retiring?
Yes. In early May 2024, Schwartzman announced he would be retiring in front of his home fans in Argentina in 2025.
“I want my last tournaments to be my own decision,” Schwartzman wrote in a post on social media. “May this 2024 be that way, hopefully having the opportunity to compete in the tournaments I enjoy the most. And in 2025, in Argentina, to be able to have my final moment, the most beautiful closing I can imagine.”
“How many moments I never imagined, how many anecdotes I never dreamed of, how many people I met who helped me grow, who taught me so much, who made me a much better player and person than anyone ever thought I would be, including me. Every corner of the court, every second training, every point competing, every moment I was immensely happy. I lived it with such intensity that today it is difficult for me to maintain it.”
“All those beautiful moments have become something that today carries weight and it is difficult for me to continue to fully enjoy. On one hand, leaving a life that gave me so much is a very difficult decision, but on the other hand, how happy I was playing tennis makes me want to keep smiling on and off the court as I always did. However, today that smile is hard to find at times. Inside me, a ‘competitive animal’ prevents me from enjoying, playing and traveling as I used to.”
“Tennis has given me everything I have and much more that I will carry with me forever. It was a wonderful journey and you were a vital part of it. That’s why I wanted to communicate it here and thank you because “El Peque” had a giant of a life. Tennis ball, what can I say to you…? You made me run a lot, laugh, cry, travel and know many places. You gave me a lot and it’s time to move on to another stage. See you soon tennis, I’ll continue sweating until the last shot and working as a professional until the last point I’ll play on a tennis court, El Peque.”

“This year I had quite a few anxiety attacks. Tennis is a bit like that. It’s best to aim for the short term and put together the goals season after season. If they told me at age 17 that I was going to do what I did, I (would have) signed, but when you enter the vortex it is a rhythm that is difficult to stop,” the Argentine said.
“You reach the semi-finals at Roland Garros, but then you reach the quarter-finals at an ATP 500 and you wonder if it’s good or bad. This year I started 14th in the world. Today, I’m 18th and I’m like, ‘What a shitty year.’ And then I think and it’s not like that. One gets into listening to others, both in the positive and in the criticism. When the bad comes, you lose the analysis of what happens,” Schwartzman said.
“This year I started therapy for everything that happens to me. Not only on the court, but in life, because of fears, anxieties and things that are normal. For the first time I started that process because I felt that I needed a little outside help to have other tools to solve,” he added.
