I won’t resign, says Australian Open tournament director Tiley
Tiley says he won’t be resigning either as CEO of Tennis Australia or tournament director of the Australian Open
Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley will not resign from his position in the wake of Novak Djokovic’s deportation from the country ahead of the year’s first Grand Slam.
Tiley told host broadcaster Channel 9: “We’ve put a statement out recently. I’m very focused today on delivering a great event. I’m proud of what the team has done. I’m proud of what we’ve delivered so far. We’ve had four days of unbelievable tennis and great entertainment, and we’ll continue to have that for the next ten days.”
He added that Tennis Australia had not paid for Djokovic’s travel or legal expenses, contrary to news reports circulating in the aftermath of the world No 1’s departure from Australia.
“We’ve had a pretty challenging build-up,” he admitted. “Being at the height of the Omicron variant has made for some pretty interesting times.”
