Australian Open: Etcheverry cruises past Monfils to reach third round

Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 30 seed, reached the third round of the Australian Open by defeating Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 at Melbourne Park.

Etcheverry, ranked No 32, will play the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the top seed, and Australian Alexei Popyrin next.

The Argentinian beat Andy Murray (6-4, 6-2, 6-2) in the previous round and has now backed up that victory with another win over a stalwart veteran of the sport in Monfils.

In the previous round, Monfils, ranked No 76, won against German Yannick Hanfmann (6-4, 6-3, 7-5).
