15 years old, fifth-youngest qualifier; Brenda Fruhvirtova moves into Australian Open main draw
The 15-year-old defeated Bouzas Maneiro 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 in two hours and 54 minutes on Thursday
Czech teen Brenda Fruhvirtova has become the fifth-youngest player to qualify for the Australian Open women’ singles draw after a three-set win over Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
Following up her wins over Daria Snigur and Natalija Kostic in the earlier rounds, the 15-year-old defeated Bouzas Maneiro 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 in two hours and 54 minutes on Thursday to move into the main draw. The Czech, ranked No 135 in the world, had come from a set and 5-1 down in the previous round to beat Snigur. With the win, she joins her 17-year-old sister Linda Fruhvirtova, who received a direct entry, in the main draw
At 15 years and nine months, Brenda is the fifth-youngest player to qualify for the Australian Open women’s draw. The youngest is Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk (at 15 years and five months), followed by Sesil Karatantcheva, Maria Sharapova, and Lina Krasnoroutskaya.
While Linda meets Australian Jaimee Fourlis in the first round, Brenda Fruhvirtova will need to wait until the qualifiers are placed in the draw to learn how about her first round opponent.
The 2023 Australian Open will also mark the first time that both the sisters are playing in the same main draw at a Major on the pro tour.
