Vienna Open: Mensik’s surge continues with win over Kecmanovic, makes quarter-finals
Jakub Mensik defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 7-6 (7). He’ll play the winner of the match between Flavio Cobolli and Alex De Minaur in the next round
Qualifier Jakub Mensik advanced to the last eight of the Vienna Open by beating Serb Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 7-6 (7) at the Wiener Stadthalle.
Victory today marked the continuation of another remarkable run of form for the 19-year-old Czech, as he continues to underline his status as one of the most exciting teenage talents on the ATP Tour.
Mensik has now won eight of his last nine matches, with his only defeat coming to Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters just under two weeks ago.
Across 2024, Mensik has beaten Andrey Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov twice, as well as reaching a maiden ATP final in Doha back in February.
Having only just turned 19 years of age in September, the prodigious Czech also reached the third round of the US Open as he has put together a thoroughly impressive first full year on Tour.
He was again too strong for his opponent today, outplaying the powerful Kecmanovic in straight sets in what was a competitive contest.
Mensik, ranked No 51, will face the winner of the match between Italian Flavio Cobolli and Australian Alex De Minaur, the second seed, next.
Jakub Mensik won against Australian Alexei Popyrin, the No 8 seed (7-6 (3), 6-2) in the previous round of the Vienna tournament.
In the previous round of the Vienna tournament, Kecmanovic, ranked No 58, defeated Argentinian Mariano Navone (6-2, 6-4).
