“Very positive start” – Sinner happy with first win in hardcourt summer swing
The Italian was playing his first singles match since Wimbledon and his first on hardcourts since Miami in March
Playing his first singles match since Wimbledon and his first on hardcourts since Miami in March, world No 1 Jannik Sinner got his U.S. summer hardcourt swing off to a positive start with straight sets win over Croatia’s Borna Coric at the ATP Montreal Masters on Thursday.
Sinner, who missed the Olympics last week due to tonsilitis, scored a comprehensive 6-2, 6-4 win over the former world No 12. The Italian later said he was happy with his performance and excited to be back on the tour.
“I was very happy and excited to go back on court. For sure it was a tough match, but I served quite well in important moments and returned well in the games when I broke him. So very positive start.”
“Obviously after Miami, it’s the first time back on hard court also, so that’s a scenario. The first match is always very difficult and tough. I was fortunate to play also a couple of matches in doubles to get this match feeling back. At the moment I watch about myself, about my game, what I have to improve, what I have to do to get better. I think that’s the most important thing at the moment for me.”
I know in my mind that that’s the right way and the right path, trying to be more unpredictable on court.

On a day when third seed Daniil Medvedev, eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, 10th seed Tommy Paul, 11th seed Ben Shelton, 12th seed Ugo Humbert and 16th seed Karen Khachanov were all knocked out, Sinner brought some cheer for the seeds with his win. But the 22-year-old knows he things to work upon as he heads to New York for the US Open Slam.
“For sure to play as many matches as possible here in the U.S. swing now, but to do that I have to improve my serve a little bit. I’m trying to move the ball around. Today I tried some variations, which didn’t work as I wanted to, but I know in my mind that that’s the right way and the right path, trying to be more unpredictable on court. Just trying to get better. Today was a positive day, and let’s see what’s coming tomorrow,” the Italian, who takes on 15th seed Alejandro Tabilo next, added.
