Toronto Masters: Medvedev untroubled by Musetti, moves into quarter-finals
Daniil Medvedev beat Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday evening and will face the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz, the No 8 seed, and Australian Alex De Minaur in the next round
Russian Daniil Medvedev, the second seed, won against Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 16 seed, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Toronto Masters at the Aviva Centre on Thursday evening.
It was a controlled performance by the defending Toronto champion, without being spectacular. Medvedev was strong behind his first serve, winning 82% of the points after making his initial serve. The Russian also had the upper hand in extended rallies, with Musetti making more errors from the back of the court.
“In general I’m happy I managed to serve a bit better, return a bit better, run a bit better,” Medvedev said after the match.
“It’s tricky conditions. For example yesterday I felt like it was very fast, today I felt like it was slow, and we could play long rallies.”
Medvedev, ranked No 3, will play the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz, the No 8 seed, and Australian Alex De Minaur next.
The Russian defeated Italian qualifier Matteo Arnaldi (6-2, 7-5) in the previous round of the Rogers Cup. In the previous rounds of the Canadian Open, Musetti, ranked No 19, won against Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (6-4, 6-1) and edged out Australian qualifier Thanasi Kokkinakis (4-6, 7-5, 6-4).
