“The end goal, obviously, is Turin and trying to make it there” – De Minaur
The Australian is currently in ninth position in the Race to the ATP Finals
Despite struggling with an adductor injury since Wimbledon, Australia’s Alex de Minaur remains in the hunt for one of the three remaining berths at the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin. The Australian did not play any tournament between Wimbledon and the US Open and then missed another month-and-a-half of the indoor season before returning in Vienna last week.
De Minaur is currently in ninth position in the Race to Turin and takes on Great Britain’s Jack Draper in the third round of the Paris Masters later today.
A win over Draper, who won the Vienna title on Sunday, would take de Minaur past Andrey Rublev and into the eighth position in the Race.
“There are a lot of mental battles going on while I’m trying to play these matches, and I’m trying to find different ways of competing with what I’ve got,” de Minaur said as quoted by The Age.
“The end goal, obviously, is Turin and trying to make it there, and every day I’m feeling a little bit better, which is a positive.”
I’m doing my best to make it happen this year, but if it doesn’t happen, I believe that everything happens for a reason, and it’s just going to make me stronger into next year.
Alex de Minaur on qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals
The 25-year-old Australian has never qualified for the ATP Finals in the past but knows that if he does not make the cut this year, there will be more chances in the future.
“I know that it’s not going to be my only chance or shot at this (ATP Finals). I know that I’ve got plenty more to give, so I’m doing my best to make it happen this year, but if it doesn’t happen, I believe that everything happens for a reason, and it’s just going to make me stronger into next year,” De Minaur said.
“The goal is to play. It all depends on the body, but sure as hell I’m going to push myself to do my best, to dig deep … I’m just going to put my head down, compete and try my best.”
