Ruud “tired of” players complaining about tennis balls
The Norwegian’s remarks have come after Daniil Medvedev claimed Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz benefitted from tennis balls used at the 2024 Shanghai Masters
World No 8 Casper Ruud minced no words in expressing annoyance over some of his fellow ATP players complaining about tennis balls used in different tournaments across the globe.
Ruud is currently in contention for the 2024 Paris Masters title. He has entered the main draw as No 7 seed and is already through to the second round, having received a bye in the first.
Ahead of the tournament, the Norwegian joined former tennis professionals John Isner, Jack Sock and others for a chat on Nothing Major podcast. There, he lashed out on his colleagues who often disapprove of tennis balls.
“You see players complain about the balls all the time,” Ruud said. “I’m getting so tired of like ‘Oh, I feel my elbow… I feel this, that, I can’t produce power, it suits this player..’ Come on. Just play.”
Ruud’s comments have notably come after Russian Daniil Medvedev claimed Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, the world No 1 and 2, respectively, benefitted from tennis balls used at the 2024 Shanghai Masters.
“For me what’s funny is some players come like five days in advance to practice,” the 25-year-old added. “And I do it myself a lot of the times, unless you’re going from tournament to tournament. They string like 28 racquets to get the right tension. Then they come to the fourth round and start complaining about the balls.
“But it’s been the same balls for the past nine days. What’s the point of bringing it up now to the umpire? Like what is he gonna change? ‘Yeah, let me call Dunlop I’ll have them send over a can for you’. What’s the point? Just to make drama out of nothing?”
