Munich Open: Garin upsets Zverev to reach semis
The Chilean will play American Taylor Fritz, the No 3 seed, for a place in the final
Chile’s Cristian Garin upset German Alexander Zverev, the top seed, 6-4, 6-4 to move into the semi-finals of the Munich Open at the MTTC Iphitos complex on Friday.
This was the fourth top 10 win for the Chilean in his career so far. He also becomes the first player since 2015 to be ranked outside the top 100 and defeat Zverev. He also beat the German in Munich in 2019.
Garin, ranked No 106, will play American Taylor Fritz, the No 3 seed, in the semi-finals – his second semi-final in a row on the tour after Estoril.
Earlier in the tournament, the Chilean, who won the title here in 2019, won against German Dominik Koepfer, the No 7 seed (7-6 (3), 6-3) and American Alex Michelsen (6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-1).
Zverev, ranked No 5, defeated Austrian Jurij Rodionov (7-6 (3), 6-2) in the previous round of the Munich tournament.
