Mexican Open: Shapovalov races past Michelsen into quarter-finals

Denis Shapovalov defeated Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday night and will face Marcos Giron in the next round

Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 9 seed, defeated American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the last eight of the Mexican Open at the Arena GNP Seguros in Acapulco on Wednesday night.

Shapovalov, ranked No 32, will play Marcos Giron next.

Ahead of his victory, the Canadian won against American qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy (7-5, 6-2).

Michelsen, ranked No 34, edged out Chinese wildcard Yunchaokete Bu (2-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5)) in the previous round of the Acapulco tournament.
