Mexican Open: Rune retires after three games v Nakashima

Brandon Nakashima benefited from the abandonment of Holger Rune (3-0) on Wednesday night and will face Belgian David Goffin in the next round

American Brandon Nakashima moved into the quarter-finals of the Mexican Open when Dane Holger Rune, the No 4 seed, retired at the Arena GNP Seguros in Acapulco on Wednesday night.

Nakashima, ranked No 42, led 3-0 when Rune, ranked No 13, pulled out due to illness.

The American will face Belgian David Goffin next.

Ahead of his victory, Brandon Nakashima won against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi (7-6 (6), 7-5).

The 21-year-old Dane defeated Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (7-6 (4), 6-3) in the previous round of the Acapulco tournament.
