Halle Open: Hurkacz beats Zverev for first time to reach final
The Pole will face Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, or Chinese Zhizhen Zhang for the title on Sunday
Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, the No 5 seed, reached the final of the Halle Open by defeating German Alexander Zverev, the second seed, 7-6 (2), 6-4 at the Owl Arena/Gerry-Weber-Stadion on Saturday.
This was Hurkacz’s 17th career top 10 victory, and he is through to the 12th final of his career – the second on grass. The first one came here in Halle itself in 2022, when he won the title. This was also the Pole’s first win over Zverev in four career meetings.
Hurkacz, ranked No 9, will face the winner of the match between Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, and Chinese Zhizhen Zhang in Sunday’s final. He has not lost a set so far en route to reaching the final.
Ahead of his win today, the Pole won against Italian Flavio Cobolli (7-5, 7-6 (2)), Australian qualifier James Duckworth (7-6 (3), 6-4) and American Marcos Giron (7-6 (5), 6-4).
Zverev, ranked No 4 in the world, beat qualifier Oscar Otte (6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4), Italian Lorenzo Sonego (6-4, 7-6 (5)) and Frenchman Arthur Fils (6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4) earlier in the week
