Roger Federer is set to drop out of the top 10 of the ATP rankings when the next edition is formally released next Monday.
Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz’s 6-3, 6-2 win over Frances Tiafoe at the BNP Paribas Open means he is going to rise from his current position of world No 12 – and above the former world No 1.
Federer will be losing a significant number of ranking points as he reached the final of Indian Wells the last time it was held, back in 2019. He lost then to Dominic Thiem in the final, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. As the Swiss is not in California to defend those points, he always knew his ranking was likely to take a hit.
This will be the first time the 40-year-old is outside the top 10 since January 2017, when his injury-afflicted 2016 had damaged his ranking significantly; he had missed half the previous year due to knee surgery. Then, he had been in the top 10 for the previous 14 years.
The top 10 in January 2017 had a rather different look compared to the one almost five years on. Andy Murray was world No 1 (currently world No 121), with Novak Djokovic No 2. They were followed by Milos Raonic (currently world No 32), Stan Wawrinka (currently world No 46), Kei Nishikori (currently world No 53), Gael Monfils (currently world No 18), Marin Cilic (currently world No 41), Dominic Thiem (currently world No 8), Rafael Nadal (currently world No 6) and the now-retired Tomas Berdych.
Hurkacz looks likely to be the new world No 10; Casper Ruud will also rise, to world No 9. Both men will be at their new career-best ranking.
The top three will stay the same, with Novak Djokovic on top of the rankings, followed by Daniil Medvedev, then Stefanos Tsitsipas, regardless of results in Indian Wells.
