Dubai Open: Medvedev knocked out by Griekspoor in quarter-finals (after 4 match points)

Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor advanced to the semi-finals of the Dubai Open by edging out Russian Daniil Medvedev, the top seed, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5 at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre on Thursday.

Medvedev was the only former champion left in the draw, and before this match had not dropped serve all week as he sought to reach the semi-finals in Dubai for the third consecutive year.

And he had four match points in the second set, all of which Griekspoor saved to force a decider.

Medvedev also received a code violation after that set for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Good stat : this was the biggest win by ranking of Griekspoor’s career, having defeated two world No 8s previously (Hubert Hurkacz and Casper Ruud).

Griekspoor, ranked No 47, will play Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 4 seed, in the semi-finals.

The Dutchman edged out Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin (5-7, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1)) and beat Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No 5 seed (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) ahead of his victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Medvedev, ranked No 6, won against German Jan-Lennard Struff (6-4, 7-6 (4)) and Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (6-4, 6-4).
