Carlos Alcaraz surpasses $20 million in career prize money at the age of 20

The Spaniard has already reached a huge earnings milestone at just 20 years of age, having won two Grand Slam titles in his young career

Despite narrowly missing out on his fifth Masters 1000 title last week in Cincinnati, Carlitos Alcaraz is still set to surpass $20 million in career prize money.

By earning this amount, the current world No 1 is the first player born in the 21st century – either male or female – to reach this milestone.

Alcaraz entered Cincinnati with $19,810,077 of total prize money prior to the tournament. With his runner-up cheque of $556,630, he now heads to the US Open with a total of $20,366,707.

Remarkably, at still just 20 years of age, Alcaraz is the 29th ATP player in history to reach this amount.

The news comes just as the ATP have announced a new initiative called the Baseline Programme, which will ensure a minimum yearly wage for all players, as well as providing a minimum threshold cover for players who play fewer than nine events in a year due to injury.

For the young man from Murcia, however, this news will be on little significance as all his attention now turns to his US Open campaign, starting next week.

The two-time Grand Slam champion will be the top seed in New York and is looking to defend a Grand Slam title for the first time in his career.
