Draper defeats Shelton in Indian Wells quarter-finals
Jack Draper got past Ben Shelton in straight sets on Thursday in Indian Wells. Draper is through to the last four to face either Carlos Alcaraz or Francisco Cerundolo.
Jack Draper reached the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open by beating Ben Shelton 6-4, 7-5 on Thursday evening. Draper needed one hour and 39 minutes to advance at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Palm Springs, California.
After a single break was enough for the British left-hander in the opening set, he came back from a break down in the second set — earning two scalps of the Shelton serve to seal the deal in straights.
“My tennis has been really improving all the time with more experience at the highest level, and I’m gaining more wins against top players like Ben,” Draper said during his post-match press conference. “Obviously today was tough conditions (against a) really tough opponent. I thought I competed great. Yeah, I did well to come through that one.”
The world No 14 will next face the winner of a match between No 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz and No 4 Francisco Cerundolo.
Draper previously defeated Brazilian wild card Joao Fonseca (6-4, 6-0), American Jenson Brooksby (7-5, 6-4) and American Taylor Fritz, the No 3 seed (7-5, 6-4).
Shelton, ranked No 12, advanced to the last eight by beating Argentinian Mariano Navone (6-3, 6-2), Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 22 seed (6-3, 7-5) and No 32 seed Brandon Nakashima (7-6 (6), 6-1).
Indian Wells Masters 1000, other last eight results:
- Francisco Cerundolo vs. Carlos Alcaraz
- Daniil Medvedev (5) beat Arthur Fils (20): 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7)
- Holger Rune (12) beat Tallon Griekspoor: 5-7, 6-0, 6-3
