Indian Wells Masters: Nakashima gets revenge on Arnaldi

American Brandon Nakashima, the No 32 seed, defeated Italian Matteo Arnaldi 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the last 16 of the Indian Wells Masters in California on Monday.

The clash was the pair’s second meeting in the last four weeks, with Arnaldi beating Nakashima in straight sets at the Delray Beach Open in February.

Nakashima was a much better version of himself this time around, however, playing in front of his home crowd in California. The 23-year-old dropped jus tone point on serve over the course of the one-hour, 15-minute match, striking just 10 unforced errors to Arnaldi’s 24.

Nakashima, ranked No 33, will play the winner of the match between Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 22 seed, and American Ben Shelton, the No 11 seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the American won against Australian Rinky Hijikata (7-5, 6-1).

Arnaldi, ranked No 35, edged out American Aleksandar Kovacevic (6-3, 5-7, 6-4) and won against Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 7 seed (6-4, 7-5) earlier in the tournament.
