Sinner out of Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award nominees list amid doping ban
Jannik Sinner has been barred from the ATP Tour till May 4 this year for failing two drug tests during the 2024 Indian Wells Open
World No 1 Jannik Sinner‘s name was dropped from the 2025 Laurues World Sportsman of the Year Award nominees list on Thursday as he serves a three-month ban in the Indian Wells doping scandal.
Sinner recorded his best season on the ATP tour in 2024, winning the Australian Open and US Open among eight trophies and posting a 73-6 win-loss record. However, two failed drug tests at the Indian Wells Open in March overshadowed his resounding success on the court. He was recently punished for the same by WADA and is now barred from competitive tennis till May 4, 2025.
The banishment has prompted the Laureus World Sports Academy to skip celebrating the Italian in their annual honours.
“Following discussions by the Laureus Academy it has been decided that Jannik Sinner’s Nomination for this year’s Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award is to be withdrawn,” the oragnisation’s chairman Sean Fitzpatrick said in a statement. “We have followed this case, the decisions of the relevant global bodies and – whilst we note the extenuating circumstances involved – feel that the three-month ban renders the nomination ineligible. Jannik and his team have been informed.”
Novak Djokovic (5), Roger Federer (5) and Rafael Nadal (2) are the only tennis players to have been honoured with the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award to date. This year’s winner will be awarded on April 21 in Madrid.
