Shapovalov records longest win streak to reach Acapulco semi-finals

Denis Shapovalov fought past Marcos Giron in the Mexican Open quarter-finals on Thursday. He will next face either Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez

Denis Shapovalov, the No 9 seed, moved into the semi-finals of the Mexican Open by beating American Marcos Giron 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the Arena GNP Seguros in Acapulco on Thursday.

This was Shapovalov’s eighth win on the trot—his longest winning streak on the ATP tour to date.

Shapovalov, ranked No 32, will next face the winner of a match between Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Mexican wildcard Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez.

The Canadian previously defeated American qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy (7-5, 6-2) and American Alex Michelsen (6-4, 6-3).

Giron reached the last eight with a win over Australian qualifier Adam Walton (7-6 (4), 6-2) and a walkover from No 3 seed Tommy Paul.
