Baez extends ATP finals winning streak to six with triumph at Rio Open
Sebastian Baez beat Alexandre Muller in straight sets in Sunday’s Rio de Janeiro final. Baez continued his dominance in finals, a stretch that also includes this same tournament last year.
Sebastian Baez maintained his mastery in ATP finals by beating Alexandre Muller 6-2, 6-3 in the Rio Open final on Sunday.
Based on Muller’s form throughout the week, one might have thought that the Frenchman might be able to give Baez’s some problems — if not even win outright. After all, Muller has already captured one title in 2025 (Hong Kong) and his Rio run included a straight-set victory over Buenos Aires champion and Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca.
Baez, however, seems to take his game to a different level when trophies are on the line. This marked the 24-year-old’s sixth consecutive finals victory dating back to the start of 2023. He is 7-2 all time in ATP finals.
“I’m trying to give my best [on] every point,” Baez said of his success on the biggest stages. “Finals are different, because you want to win the tournament, the title, the trophy. But I’m trying to be focused on the game; that is the most difficult part of the finals. I think the support from my coaches, from my team is so important for me. That helped me a lot.”
Here is the Argentine’s full list of ATP finals appearances, which includes a triumph at this same ATP 500 tournament in Rio 12 months ago:
- 2022 Chile Open: Lost to Pedro Martinez 4-6, 6-4, 6-4
- 2022 Estoril Open: Defeated Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-2
- 2022 Swedish Open: Lost to Francisco Cerundolo 7-6 (4), 6-2
- 2023 Cordoba Open: Defeated Federico Coria 6-1, 3-6, 6-3
- 2023 Austrian Open: Defeated Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-1

- 2024 Chile Open: Defeated Alejandro Table 3-6, 6-0, 6-4

Baez is the third player on the ATP Tour in 2025 to successfully defend a 2024 title, joining Jannik Sinner (Australian Open) and Ugo Humbert (Marseille).
