Rio Open: Lucky Loser Ugo Carabelli makes semi-finals

Argentinian lucky loser Camilo Ugo Carabelli advanced to the last 4 of the Rio Open by winning against Portuguese lucky loser Jaime Faria 7-6 (5), 6-4 at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro on Friday evening.

In the second all Lucky Loser quarter-final in ATP history, Ugo Carabelli reached his first career semi-final.

Ugo Carabelli, ranked No 91, will play Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 5 seed, next.

The Argentinian is already up 23 spots in the live rankings, to a career-high 68 (previous: 87).

Earlier in the tournament, the Argentinian defeated Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero, the No 7 seed (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Bosnian Damir Dzumhur (6-4, 6-4).

Faria, ranked No 107, beat Chilean qualifier Tomas Barrios Vera (6-2, 7-5) and Spaniard Jaume Munar (6-4, 2-6, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Rio tournament.
