Qatar Open: Mertens reaches last 16
Elise Mertens defeated Cristina Bucsa 6-2, 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon and will face the winner of the match between Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, and Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in the next round
Belgian Elise Mertens advanced to the last 16 of the Qatar Open by winning against Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa 6-2, 6-3 at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha on Tuesday afternoon.
Mertens, ranked No 32, will play the winner of the match between Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, and Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova next.
In the previous round of the Qatar tournament, the Belgian benefited from the abandonment of Dane Clara Tauson (6-0).
Bucsa, ranked No 116, edged out Russian Anna Kalinskaya, the No 14 seed (6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-4) in the previous round of the Qatar tournament.
