Auger-Aliassime’s retirement sends Vavassori into Rotterdam Open second round
Andrea Vavassori benefited from the abandonment of Felix Auger-Aliassime. He’ll face Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz next
Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori reached the second round of the Rotterdam Open when Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime retired on Wednesday at the Rotterdam Ahoy.
Vavassori, ranked No 317, and Auger-Aliassime were tied one set apiece (6-7 (3), 6-4) when the Canadian, ranked No 23, pulled out.
“Unfortunately, I had to withdraw from my match here in Rotterdam today due to a problem with my right toe that came up during yesterday’s practice,” Auger-Aliassime wrote on X. “I wish it could have felt better for the match; however, I’ll have it taken care of this week. I’m sad to leave a tournament that I love early, but I hope to be fresh and ready to go for Doha coming up.”
The Italian will face Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed, next.
